Hiking Near Mont Blanc in Haute Savoie.
France has a rhythm to it when spring arrives. Flowers begin to emerge. The Hiking season officially starts.

The long winter slowly loosens its grip, restaurant terraces begin to fill again, wildflowers return to the hillsides, and suddenly the calendar opens up with one invitation after another. May, especially feels made for gathering with friends, and escaping into nature. As an African living in the French countryside, sometimes there is a loneliness that cannot be explained especially if you are not surrounded by people that look like you. Thus getting out and about feels special.
On the labor day weekend, we decided to join a group of friends for a hike near Passy,(located in the Haute-Savoie department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region) heading toward the Mont Blanc region from our home. We took the Albertville route toward Chamonix, winding through mountain roads that somehow never lose their magic, no matter how many times you drive them. There is something deeply grounding about being in the mountains.

The further we travelled through the alpine ranges, the quieter everything seemed to become. The mountains have a way of making you feel small, but in the best possible way reminding you that beauty still exists despite some of the heaviness in the world.

Every curve in the road opened onto another dramatic landscape: green valleys waking up after winter, forests stretching across the hillsides, and snow still resting quietly on the peaks above. Looking out toward the Mont Blanc massif felt surreal at times. passing through Pretty little villages and open Saturday markets remain some of my favourite ways to experience travel around France.

I have done many solo hikes over the years, and there is something very special about hiking alone the silence, the reflection, the feeling of moving entirely at your own pace. But this hike felt different in a beautiful way because we experienced it together with family and friends. The conversations, the shared snacks, the children exploring ahead on the trail, and the moments where everyone stopped simply to admire the view, all of it made the day feel fuller somehow.

Our Starting Point- Plateau d’Assy
We began our hike from the Plateau d’Assy area above Passy. While three of our friends chose to take the Via Ferrata route and meet us near the top, the rest of us followed the hiking trail through the forest. The path quickly moved into shaded woodland sections with gentle elevation gain before opening onto panoramic viewpoints overlooking the valley below. The route followed a mix of alpine tracks and winding mountain trails, passing through quiet forest sections and open clearings. Along the way, we crossed several zigzagging sections that climbed steadily through the hillside. The higher we climbed, the more expansive the scenery became.

One of the highlights of the route was the area near the Chalets de Varan, a beautiful mountain refuge perched above the valley. The rustic chalets, surrounded by green slopes and dramatic alpine backdrops, felt timeless. It is one of those places where you instinctively slow down, breathe deeper, and simply take in the silence.

The Landscape
What made this hike memorable was the contrast in scenery. Dense green forests gave way to exposed mountain views, with occasional glimpses toward the Mont Blanc range. The terrain alternated between soft woodland trails and rocky mountain paths, creating a route that felt varied without being overly technical. Spring flowers had already begun appearing along parts of the trail, and the fresh mountain air carried that unmistakable alpine scent of pine, wet earth, and melting snow.

Reflections From the Trail
There is something special about hiking in the French Alps, especially in spring before the full summer crowds arrive. Passy feels quieter than some of the more famous nearby destinations, yet the scenery is equally breathtaking. This hike (check us out on Strava for the exact route) reminded me why I love living in this part of France the ability to leave home in the morning and, within a short distance, find myself surrounded by mountains, forests, and silence.

As an African living far from home, there are moments when standing out or feeling isolated can feel heavy. But the mountains have a way of reminding you that nature belongs to all of us. Out there on the trails, surrounded by the vastness of the Alps, you feel connected to something much bigger than yourself.
